MEET KAIA

Kaia with Katie Couric
Kaia Alexander (also known as K. Hollan Van Zandt) is a writer and filmmaker. Her debut novel, Written in the Ashes, explores the events that led up to the burning of the Great Library of Alexandria, Egypt in the 5th century, and the life and tragic murder of Hypatia, the first female mathematician /philosopher. Also a screenwriter and director, Kaia’s documentary feature, CHALICE: Women Leaders Rise, examines how women were written out of history, and the paradigm shift toward strong female leadership today. A graduate of Antioch University, she majored in English, and focused on the lost history of ancient Goddess traditions and contemporary feminism. As a teen, she founded the youth division of the Humane Society of the United States. Kaia’s spiritual journey harkens to meditation, consciousness, yoga, surfing and psychedelics. Ever the mystic misfit, she’s proud to be the ‘B’ in LGBTQ, and considers herself a pantheist of the Divine Feminine. Her mentors are bestselling novelist/humorist, Tom Robbins, and the late comedian, Garry Shandling.

“It was such a pleasure working with you, Kaia.” –Ashley Judd, actress, activist

WRITTEN IN THE ASHES

Kaia’s debut historical novel, Written in the Ashes, features the untold story of the events that led up to the burning of the Great Library of Alexandria, Egypt. It follows the life and death of celebrated philosopher/astronomer Hypatia of Alexandria. A novel full of powerful women working together against impossible odds, it’s one of the first books of its kind to illustrate the hero’s journey for women.

“Written in the Ashes is one of those rare novels that sets ‘history’ afire, to bathe readers in the glow of a greater, hotter truth. Fans of the Mists of Avalon will find this romantic/alchemical/feminist/spiritual epic equally captivating.” -Tom Robbins, New York Times bestselling author of Even Cowgirls Get the Blues
